Understanding Our Orthodontic Treatment in Nashville

Patients are often unsure of what to expect from orthodontic treatment. At Braces By Dr. Ruth, diagnostic tests are performed during the initial visit to determine the most effective course of treatment. Complete diagnostic records include medical and dental history, clinical examination, x-rays plaster models, and photos of the patient’s face and teeth. We use this information to create a treatment plan that is customized for each patient.

Dr. Ruth can explain what you should expect during treatment in a consultation. Call (615) 323-2026 to arrange an appointment.

What to Expect During Orthodontic Treatment

The first step is a consultation at no charge to you. Dr. Ruth will evaluate your records and discuss your treatment plan, including the cost of the treatment. When your braces are put on, you should expect to be in the office for an hour or two. After that, you will come for regular visits about every four to eight weeks for adjustments. We recommend that you cancel these appointments only for an emergency, as they are scheduled many weeks out and often difficult to reschedule.

Orthodontic Care: Foods to Avoid with Braces

  • Chewy foods, such as licorice or bagels
  • Sticky foods, such as gum and sticky candy
  • Hard foods
  • Crunchy foods like popcorn
  • Chewing on ice
  • Foods that you need to bite into, such as apples and corn on the cob

You can expect a bit of discomfort or tenderness when you first get your braces. This is normal and will subside in a few days. In the meantime, you can relive the pain by swishing a solution of salt water in your mouth. Use about a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gargle the solution, but don’t swallow it.

Braces Maintenance: Tips for Optimal Oral Health

Proper care and adhering to the treatment plan will ensure that you end up with a mouth full of straight and healthy teeth. This means that you must consistently wear headgear, bands, your retainer, or other appliances, as recommended by our Nashville orthodontist. It is also very important to brush and floss regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy. If your wires or bands become loose between appointments, please call our office. We will check your braces and repair any problems.
